5 Jul

On July 3rd 2008, Newsweek did an article creating a funeral, funeral cost and FCA– Funeral Consumer Alliance stir. The picture of the biodegradable casket gives you a look at future funeral cost. Joshua Slocum of the Funeral Consumers Alliance also did a great Job handling comments after the article appeared. Slocum is a true Funeral Futurist. The article is Called “A Serious Undertaking.”

Quoting from the Newsweek Article:

“the annual conference of the Funeral Consumers Alliance, a watchdog group for the death-care industry that advocates simple, personalized and environmentally sound alternatives to the typical American burial.”

Joshua Slocum is exactly correct when the article quotes him:

“I want people to be shocked,” Slocum says, “that in some states, the body belongs to the mortuary by state law. And once a funeral director has got a body in the door, it’s over.

This was a very informative television program. From the decomposing of bodies, to the traditional funeral business. There was even a look inside cremation ovens.

The cemetery of the future was addressed. The focus was on the San Francisco Area. The Green Cemetery and the green funeral.
Funeral Cost that can be saved in cremation and green was not addressed,
The good news is that the series Modern Marvels: Corpse Tech continues to shown on the History channel.

The shows how the dead help the living.
Organ donation, tissue donation and research.
The newest and best cremation machines were featured.
Good Stuff.

The statistics given in the show were not entirely accurate coming from 2006.
Cremation rates are up. Funeral Cost is down.

Your Funeral Guy Dear Abby opposes Trolling for Preneed Funeral Cost.

20 Jun

Dear Abby opposes Trolling for Preneed Funeral Cost. Even the National Funeral Directors Association( NFDA did an article on this one). When you visit a traditional Funeral Home watch for trolls on Funeral Cost.Over a year ago Dear Abby posted a letter on what you can run into at a traditional funeral home…someone trolling for prearrangement funeral cost(s)

“A funeral home trolling for business from grieving friends and relatives of the deceased mother and daughter two days after the granddaughter’s funeral? And to use the signed book (to receive memorials) for names, addresses and phone numbers to “promote business” is, in my eyes, unconscionable! Your thoughts, please.

Doris”

This is the old bait and switch trick applied to funeral homes & funeral cost.

Dear Abby’s response:

“DEAR DORIS: Just when I think I have seen it all, a letter like yours lands on my desk.

Whether the person who called you was the funeral director or a salesman, that person is his own worst enemy.

“People with such little sensitivity for the feelings of others should not be in a people-oriented profession.

If that man’s employer reads this, I strongly recommend that he be relegated to the back room, where the individuals he deals with are far beyond the cares and concerns of this world.”

Your Funeral Guy: More Dignity and Low Funeral Cost-Pine or Cardboard

12 Jun

A cardboard casket can save on Funeral Cost. There actually can be more dignity and low funeral cost with a simple pine box or a pressed cardboard casket. This low cost funeral option is available today just as it was 1971 for a Supreme Court Justice who insisted on LOWER Funeral Cost.

A funeral service was held for my father at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Over 1,000 people attended, including the President of the United States…..In making the funeral arrangements, we had only three directives from my father: 1) simple, 2) cheap, 3) no open casket.”—Credit to the Funeral Consumers Alliance for a great article!

http://www.funerals.org/frequently-asked-questions/funeral-arrangements/28-arrangements/51-qsimple-and-cheapq-my-father-said

In {Canada} British Columbia —a Victoria funeral parlor is presenting lower funeral cost by selling cardboard caskets covered in wood veneer. They are made from cardboard, that is recycled and pressed to provide strength. The caskets come in imitations of pine, oak and other fine wood.

Cardboard caskets require less time and fuel in the cremation process, which reduces emissions. and put out less chemicals. Many are choosing cremation as an alternative to burial.

The caskets cost less than their real wood counterparts and it is expected the price will be reduced as sales increase. Your Funeral Guy has sold cardboard caskets.

Cremation however may not be green.
Cremations are coming under a lot of scrutiny due to harm to the environment. Cremation fires are not the best thing for the upper atmosphere.
Cremation comes with ashes and an urn.
Cremated remains need to placed, buried or scattered.
Biodegradable caskets are used in a green funeral without a vault and leave no embalming chemicals in the ground.

The best reason for biodegradable cardboard caskets is lower cost and a healthier environment.

What do you think?

Would you go down for the last time in a cardboard casket?

Lower cost funerals provide for a better future.and more money for the living.

Your Funeral Guy: 3 funeral cost negotiation tools.

14 May

There are many funeral cost negotiation tools: Here are three funeral cost negotiation tools.

The 1st Funeral Cost Negotiation tool is right there on the General Price List. A GPL or general price list is required by the Funeral Rule and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If you inquire on prices a Funeral Home is required by a body of Congressional Law to supply a General Price List. Every time you find yourself at different funeral home it is a good idea to pick one up.

The 1st funeral cost negotiation tool is:You do not have to accept the prices on the General Price List of a specific package Many folks simply believe that the GPL is the final deal on the cost of a funeral. Under the Funeral Rule you can purchase only the services you want.

The General Price List is simply the start of the funeral negotiation process. It is only the starting point of negotiations!

The 2nd Funeral cost Negotiation tool is to use tried and true negotiation tactics as negotiation tactics as you would in buying a car or a house.
One simple tactic is to tell the funeral director you are going to pay(offer) less than his fees.

The 3rd Secret Funeral cost Negotiation tool s ask the funeral director to leave before you sign the final contract.
Just say you need to take some time to discuss it with your family! You have the right to take some time on this big decision.

Your Funeral Guy: Causes and Cost of “Rest in Peace”

12 Apr

The causes and costs of “Rest in Peace Insider’s Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral” personally are many. But Injury, multiple illnesses, financial difficulties, a lot of reflection and stress are the main costs and causes. I personally met Robert Kennedy in Washington D.C in 1966 only to watch his State Funeral from a hospital bed in 1968. Little did he know I would someday be a Funeral Director In the Washington DC serving the nation’s elite and poor.

I have presided over services at both Arlington National Cemetery and at the Marine Base in Quantico for those who fought in the Iraq War. An injury (and accompanying illnesses) forced me to take a leave from the funeral business and gave me time for consulting and to write “Rest in Peace.” I live in Illinois with my family. This is a real zingwacker of a personal story!
