Your Funeral Guy: Causes and Cost of “Rest in Peace”

12 Apr

The causes and costs of “Rest in Peace Insider’s Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral” personally are many. But Injury, multiple illnesses, financial difficulties, a lot of reflection and stress are the main costs and causes. I personally met Robert Kennedy in Washington D.C in 1966 only to watch his State Funeral from a hospital bed in 1968. Little did he know I would someday be a Funeral Director In the Washington DC serving the nation’s elite and poor.

I have presided over services at both Arlington National Cemetery and at the Marine Base in Quantico for those who fought in the Iraq War. An injury (and accompanying illnesses) forced me to take a leave from the funeral business and gave me time for consulting and to write “Rest in Peace.” I live in Illinois with my family. This is a real zingwacker of a personal story!

Your Funeral Guy: 5 ways the Funeral Rule Helps You with Your Lower Cost Funeral

3 Apr

In the book “Rest in Peace” (Rest in Peace, Insider Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral) you are given a Funeral Bill of Rights based upon the funeral rule. The Funeral Rule was upheld in March 2008, by the Federal Trade Commission. ( FTC)The Funeral Rule protects your rights to a lower cost Funeral And Helps you with Funeral Cost.

1. 1.You have the right to choose ONLY the funeral goods and services you want.

This means you are in charge. Remember your wants and needs come before that of the Funeral Director.

2. 2. The funeral provider must state or identify the goods and services in writing on the general price list.

3. 3. If you visit a Funeral Home you Must be given a casket price list.

Many Funeral Homes purposely do not do this—so they can make a huge profit on the casket.

4. 4.The funeral provider may not refuse, or charge a fee, to handle a third party casket you bought elsewhere.

It is usually best to get the casket off the internet.

5. 5.A funeral provider that offers cremations must make alternative containers available.

An alternative container is a cardboard type of container that is used in cremation in place of the casket.

· TERMS in the Funeral Rule:

Funeral goods” are products sold directly to the public in connection with funeral services or a funeral.

Funeral services” are services used to care for and prepare bodies for burial, cremation, or other final disposition. Funeral services and Funerals are also used to arrange, supervise, or conduct the funeral ceremony or final disposition of human remains.

Your Funeral Guy: Funeral, Funeral Homes & Funeral Cost

16 Mar

Funeral, Funeral Home, and Funeral Cost all the good information is here from Your Funeral Guy.

“121,088”
“Funeral homes in the U.S.”

It may surprise you to know that there are only over a little over 121,000 Funeral Homes in the USA. It may shock you to know that you do not need a funeral home to do a funeral. You do however in most jurisdictions need a funeral director. Usually the funeral director is only associated with a funeral home. Many Funeral Directors these days are operating independently of Funeral Homes in an effort to reduce your funeral cost and funeral expenses.

“105,668”
“Number of people who work in the funeral service industry.”

You may not be aware of this situation but many of those who work at funeral homes are not funeral directors. There are secretaries, administrators, and funeral associates as well as funeral directors.
A licensed funeral director is needed however to do a funeral and be present at a burial in most states.

“112 ” (Jan 10th 2009 it is now 100)
“The number of funerals an average home handles per year.”

A funeral home that does 112 Funerals a year may not be the best place to do a funeral. A funeral home just cannot be profitable on 112 funerals a year. If you are a good negotiator you may be able to do a lower cost funeral. But watch out, the pressure on the funeral director there to make a profit off your family’s grief is quite high.

“33.5 percent”
“Percentage of bodies cremated in 2006.”

This is quite amazing in light of the fact that cremations in 1970 were quite unheard off.
Cremation is often the best path to a lower cost funeral. Many folks are not aware that funeral fires were often not available 1970’s. Funeral Cremations today are available almost everywhere in the USA. Cremation is also mandatory in Japan.

“57 percent””
“Expected cremation rates by 2025.”

“$6,195”
“Average cost in 2007 of a funeral with casket; includes embalming, transportation, casket and use of funeral home facilities.”

Many are shocked to find the cost of a funeral to be this high today. A funeral does not have to cost that much and there are several movements afoot to help people lower the cost of their funerals. Indeed if you desire to lower the cost of your funerals you can get help from books, blogs and the FCA or Funeral Consumers Alliance.

Your Funeral Guy: Senator Obama, Please do NOT Raise OUR Funeral Cost

6 Mar

Dear Senator Barack Obama,

Mr. Presidential candidate 2008 Please do not raise OUR Funeral Cost. The National Funeral Directors Association is calling for March 11, th 2008, to be National Funeral Director and Morticians Day. Please do not allow this to happen. While your at it it, it would be good for you to investigate the 40,000,000 “IFDA” trust scandal in your own state, By ignoring This Funeral Trust Scandal and other abuses the folks prepaid funeral cost money you are raising funeral cost. If you allow National Morticians Day, you will make the problem worse.

As a funeral director/mortician in the State of Illinois and an advocate of lower cost funerals, reduced funeral costs and the lower cost funeral, I would urge you NOT to co-sponsor and actively support passage of House Resolution 892, introduced by Representative Charlie Wilson (D-OH) “DESIGNATING MARCH 11, 2008, AS NATIONAL FUNERAL DIRECTOR AND MORTICIAN RECOGNITION DAY. This WOULD BE AN EMBARRASSMENT TO ALL US SENATORS and the United States Congress.

The Illinois Funeral Directors Association admitted to mishandling 40 Million Dollars in the IFDA Preneed trust. There license to handle the trust fund has been removed by the State of Illinois.

Supporting this Measure will result in embarrassment to You, Senator Obama, as well as the United States Senate and the United States Congress.

I hope you will NOT support this Resolution and investigate the IFDA Preneed trust situation. This is a true embarrassment to the State of Illinois. This measure will imply support to funeral directors and morticians, giving them the blessing of the United States Government. As a result It will raise funeral cost in this Great land. The presidential election 2008 is a great challenge but please take time out for this.

Your Funeral Guy, Author, Funeral Director, State of Illinois R.Brian Burkhardt

This measure will not contribute to the broad prosperity, personal freedom, and better future,of all Americans. It simply, buries a National Disgrace: Mishandling of $40,0000 of the folks money in the great State of Illinois. The Illinois funeral directors association needs investigation.
I hope that you will assume leadership in this matter. This Scandal does not appear to rest in peace.
