The Family of Senator Robert Byrd has requested that no there be no camera,video coverage of his “closed casket” Visitation in the US Senate Chamber today, July1st 2010.
Senator Robert Byrd Died Early Monday Morning at age 92. One of his wishes was that was upon his death that he would lie in State on the Senate.
The longest-serving member of Congress, Robert Byrd, who died at the age of 92 early Monday morning, will lie in repose in the Senate chamber today. The last time a Senator was granted this honor took place in 1959, the year Byrd joined the Senate. Byrd served in Congress for 57 years and was the Senator from West Virginia for 51 years.
Byrd’s casket will be placed on the Lincoln Catafalque, a wooden platform that originally supported President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, and has supported Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Ronald Reagan and others.
Due to the wishes of the family, there will be no coverage of his casket in the Senate chamber.
President Obama and vice President Obama are due to attend the Robert Byrd memorial service on Friday Morning.
