The Funeral industry is turning to thing after thing to keep their sales high, under funeral personalization.

The Latest “HOT ROD Caskets” is ust another ploy to increase your funeral cost.

It’s not every day you see funeral directors lined up to take photos at a trade-show booth and snapping up T-shirts depicting a flame-throwing casket under NEW … slogan “Let ‘er R.I.P.!”

But that’s the situation at the Hot Rod Caskets display on the expo floor at the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) convention in New Orleans this week. ….

LaDonna Parks and her husband Corey are co-owners of Hot Rod Caskets, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Neither has a background in the funeral industry — he’s a firefighter, she works in a bank — but when one of Corey’s friends was killed in a motorcycle accident a few years ago, they saw an unfilled need.

Randall L. Earl is about to be elected President  Elect Of The NFDA. This is truly a nightmare on Funeral Street. Earl is a central figure in the Illinois Funeral Directors Association Ponzi Scheme.(IFDA Preneed Trust-over 100 milliom dollars gone) Most folks are not aware of his role in this mess. As past President of the IFDA , his role in the Missuse of funds in the Museum of Funeral Customs, and involvement with IFDA Services in the scam make him an unsafe figure in anything Funeral.

The National Funeral Directors Association would do well not to Elect him President at the NFDA convention currently going on in New Orleans.

Earl is Named in all the IFDA Lawsuits and at the center of the scandal

28 Sep Casket side view on black

Eighty Percent of the Families who purhase traditional funerals want to pay less for caskets. This is according  to National Funeral  Directors Association ( NFDA)  information given to www.wausaudailyherald.com

A Wisconsin man is selling Caskets for about $1,000 Less than the usual cost at a funeral home.

Folks are demanding lower funeral cost.

The Antigo man — now a casket maker — this summer opened Caskets and More at Cedar Creek Mall in Rothschild, where he offers direct sales of the single most expensive funeral item: Caskets.

He said he can shave at least $1,000 off what people pay for caskets at funeral homes, and his efforts are coming at a good time. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, the slow economy has pushed more families to seek out less expensive funerals.

Funerals, on average, cost about $7,300, according to National Funeral Directors Association data, and about 80 percent of families are thwarting costs with the purchase of cheaper caskets.

The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) needs to report On Funeral Costs- The Last time they reported on Funeral Costs was over Three Years Ago(figures from 2006).

No matter how they spin it their actions have been pulling the wool over the Funeral Consumer’s eyes.

This somewhat secretive society just does not want the folks to know current funeral cost. It is my opinion that my fellow funeral directors do this so they can charge you more.

More Preneed Fraud in Illinois-YourFuneralGuy

16 Sep
Map of USA with Illinois highlighted
Illinois Image via Wikipedia

There has been another case of Funeral Preneed Fraud, another case of the Funeral Director takes your money in a prepaid funeral contract(Scam).

The most famous case of this in Illinois recently, was a scam hatched by the Illinois Funeral Directors Association in their IFDA Preneed Trust Scam where 100 million + dollars of the of the folks prepaid  funeral money in Illinois disappeared. Incredibly at the center of the IFDA scam is the current National Funeral Directors Association(NFDA) Executive Treasurer, Randal L Earl.

Snippet from the current Preneed scam Story:

A former Southern Illinois funeral director has been charged with mishandling funds from multiple pre-need funeral service contracts.

John B. Jones, a former partner with Gaskins-Jones Funeral Home in Harrisburg, faces 11 felony counts of theft and failure to deposit funds into a trust account — all dealing with pre-need funeral arrangements.

A warrant has been issued for Jones’ arrest, but as of Tuesday afternoon, he was still being sought by police, according to Special Prosecutor Charles Zalar with the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor’s Office in Springfield. Bond in the case has been set at $100,000.

The charges were filed last week by Zalar.

He alleges that Jones, 50, of Equality, Ill., accepted payment from various pre-need funeral service clients and failed to purchase life insurance policies or annuities. Jones is accused of putting the money into the funeral home’s checking account to pay for business expenses instead.

The lesson from the Scandal state of Illinois is to avoid funeral preneed or prepaid funerals.

Charles B. Rangel

Funeral Directors and the National Funeral Directors Association(NFDA) needed to cut all ties with Charlie Rangel the Congressman who is facing ethics charges in the US  House of Representatives.

The ethics committe has publically read the charges against him and they are not pretty.

Funeral Directors have kept him in their pocket for years.

about Rangal’s political donations received from funeral directors, John Fitch the chief Lobbyist for the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) said of Charles Rangal:

“Charlie likes funeral directors, and funeral directors like Charlie,” said John Fitch, of the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA):

Batesville Casket Co. sponsoring Lunch for Corrupt Funeral Directors?|Your Funeral Guy

16 May

The Illinois Funeral Directors Association has appeared to survive to their next  convention in June  2010. The  Convention Brochure gives mention of the IFDA Preneed Trust new Trustee Fiduciary Partners.but not the ponzi scheme lawsuit. There is no mention  in their brochure of the status of the Trust, the lawsuits and the situation with regulators.

Batesville Casket Company seemingly does not care about the corruption charges, pending and the questionable dealings at the IFDA for it is sponsoring the lunch at  the  IFDA convention. Batesville continues to throw money at dying funeral entities like the Illinois Funeral Directors Association to keep itself in business.

In the Illinois Funeral Directors Association scandal over 40 million was lost before the Wall Street Crash of September 2008. The figure on monies lost is now 100 million dollars. Loans to board members were made out of the Good folks of Illinois  Funeral Money(IFDA Pre Need Trust) over the years.

Again at this convention the questionable  former IFDA president and former head of the Museum of Funeral Customs, NFDA (National Funeral Directors Association)treasurer Randal l Earl will be honored at the convention.

Time will tell but it does appear that the Illinois Funeral Directors Association good old boy network may have survived the IFDA Preneed Trust Scam.

WalMart, Amazon.com Selling caskets still has Funeral Homes Concerned-YourFuneralGuy

13 May

It has been over 6 months since WalMart has been selling caskets online and the Funeral Industry is still quite worried.

Costco and Amazon.com also have the  the industry worried. Some Funeral Homes are adjusting many are not.

The continued emphasis on Funeral personalization may not be enough to overcome the public’ss appetite for cremation in funeral arrangements.

24hourCasket.com

With Wal-Mart, Costco, even Amazon (through 24HourCaskets.com) now offering items such as caskets and funeral urns, the industry has had to adapt, placing an increased emphasis on service and personalization.

And a sector once considered sheltered if not immune from economic pressures hasn’t escaped the effects of the recession. Consumers are more cost-conscious, and death rates have been static. In fact, some studies show that death rates tend to decline during recessions; the National Funeral Directors Association says the rate fell to 7.9 per 1,000 population in 2009 compared with 8.1 in 2008.

Grave Expectations planning the end like there is no tomorrow- a yourfuneralguy book review

27 Apr

The title of the book, “Grave Expectations Planning the End like there is no Tomorrow”is clever, and the graphics are done well,  That is where the value of this “funeral” book begins and ends.

There is too much writing required in this book, for the person who wants to plan their funeral. There are many cute facts about funerals written on the white background in the margin of this book. They are simply interesting things about funerals that have nothing to do with planning one’s funeral.

This work has several pages that warn you about Funeral Directors, but gives no concrete advice on how to deal with the sales professionals you will negotiate your funeral contract with. There is no real advice beyond:

“Don’t let anyone push you around or embarrass you. Go to the internet and check out all the options you have choose from”(page 53).

This is poor advice as the places to plan your funeral online are too numerous to count. Some are very good and others not so good. A little guidance on this would have been helpful.

There ARE NO WORDS in the book on how to deal with funeral pre need or prepaying for a funeral, which is how many folks deal with a funeral in North America. Many folks have been taken and lost money in preneed funeral schemes. Not to mention the Prepaid Funeral and the pitfalls involved makes this work inadequate.

In Chapter 10 the idea of A Funeral Rehearsal dinner that one attends before one’s death is a very creative idea, and thoughtful. But in many death circumstances(sudden death, long hospitalization) it is not at all possible.

The book offers some falsehoods when looking for an urn on line. On Page 96 the authors state that the International Cemetery and Funeral Association(ICCFA) and the National Funeral Directors Association(NFDA) police online establishments that sell funeral goods and services..(Page 96)

The sad truth is that these organizations simply are not setup to do this. They do not even police their own members, and could not even if they wanted to. The fact that the authors allowed that to be printed indicates a lack of understanding about funerals and the funeral industry.

There is much more that can be said about this book. It is incomplete and too tedious(too much writing) exercise in planning your funeral.

The authors and Cider Mill Press, the publisher did not do their homework om Funerals.
