In spite of  the many options to lower the cost of a funeral,  most folks do find funerals expensive and have trouble lowering the cost of  a funeral or finding a way to lower the cost of a funeral. When you think of a funeral, many people think about the casket, the church service and grave burial. But there are many other choices, especially if you’re looking to reduce costs.

It is an inevitable part of life. “It’s something we simply don’t like to talk about,” said Overton Ganong of the Funeral Consumers Alliance of South Carolina.

Dealing with death is hard. Not planning for it makes it worse. “It was such a whirlwind event, it was really kind of just numbing,” said Tammy Chapman.

Cancer took Chapman’s father Julian, and she was responsible for the funeral. He owned a burial plot, but didn’t have life insurance. That left Tammy with few options. “When he passed unexpectedly like that, we had literally just enough money to bury him,” said Chapman.

Tammy’s situation is all too familiar to the Funeral Consumers Alliance. “We see a lot of times families getting into real disagreements at the time of the death when there has been no conversation around these issues,” said Ganong.

Ganong says families should talk about what they want. Tight budgets make that conversation crucial. “Funerals are not inexpensive,” said Greg Dunbar, who manages a funeral home in Columbia.

One way folks are saving in this economy is to do the funeral in church. If you think about it is rather silly to do the funeral both places. The church has all the facilities you need. In many funerals the church is the main focus of the event anyway.

So why not cut  the amount you pay the funeral home. The Federal Trade Commission has recently ruled that the  the funeral home can discount the basic service fee.

The Church has been competing with the Funeral Home for quite some time. Many ministers are fed up with the Funeral Directors-and have all services at a church. I have worked with churches were the casket is dropped off by the FD -The Church does it all and the funeral directors return when it is time to head to the cemetery.

A snippet from an  article  points out that  cremation has fueled church involvement with funerals-The clergy acting in a funeral director role:

Robert Novak dies|Funeral Arrangements-yourfuneralguy

The Washington Journalist Robert Novak has died.

Robert Novak has died. He died at his home early on Tuesday morning. Revealed here are the Robert Novak funeral arrangements.

Novak was a well known journalist who worked for the Chicago Sun Times for decades. I grew up reading his news reporting and commentary.

Recently he was known for breaking the Valerie Plame  CIA scandal that led to the resignation of Dick Cheney’s Chief of Staff in the Bush administration.

“Fellow “Charlie’s Angels” star Kate Jackson, former model Cheryl Tiegs and rocker Rod Stewart’s ex-wife Alana Stewart were also among the mourners. Fawcett’s Los Angeles cancer doctor, Dr. Lawrence Piro, delivered the eulogy with Stewart.

Fawcett’s coffin was taken into the church as a quartet of musicians played “Amazing Grace” and Irving Berlin love song “Always”, according to the program.”

If you want to come in under the average cost of a funeral,you can do a free cremation. This generally is done through an anatomical gift organization  or medical school.

Be aware that in most of these situations there is no timely return of the cremated remains of your loved one. If the return of the remains does not bother you please call your local medical school  or anatomical gift organization.

Remember however please do a memorial service at a local church, community center or VFW hall. This way you will be sure to come in under the average cost of a funeral.

Step 1: Choose Cremation and have the service somewhere other than the funeral home.

Step 2: Obtain your casket from an alternative source. Suggestion Order it on the internet.

Step 3: Refuse Embalming- in most cases but not all you may do this

Step 4: Do Everything at the cemetery as was the case with Walt Disney

Step 5: Do as much as possible at church, not the funeral home.

Step 6: Do a home funeral

Step 7: Have a green burial.

A home funeral and a green burial may be not doable in certain parts of the USA today. They will become available to all in the near future.
