Your Funeral Guy’s blog and book has been featured at MSN Money Central. This is a good step toward families learning how to do a lower cost Funeral.

In this economy for many folks it is important to lower funeral cost.

Folks simply find putting Ten  to Fifteen Thousand  in the ground unacceptable in the current uncertain Economy.

Today Many folks say that you can save on a funeral by not choosing embalming, something that is not required by Law.

With a little forethought, you, too, can save thousands of dollars on a funeral or the burial of a loved one, the experts say. Here are some of their top tips:

  • Choose cremation. “The National Funeral Directors Association says the average cost of a funeral in 2006 was $7,323. That does not include a cemetery. The average cost of a cremation is between $1,000 and $1,500,” says R. Brian Burkhardt, the author of “Rest in Peace: Insider’s Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral” and the author of a blog about the funeral industry. “So cremation is the No. 1 way to save money on your funeral.”
  • Save even more by choosing “direct cremation.” The deceased is promptly cremated, without a funeral service or viewing. Direct cremation usually includes transport of the body, cremation and a cardboard or plastic container for the ashes.
  • Skip the preservative. “Forgo embalming,” says Burkhardt. “Under the law — the Funeral Rule — you have the right to forgo embalming. That can save you between $600 and $800 on the funeral.” Want a traditional funeral anyway? Just choose a closed casket, Burkhardt says. “If the body’s not viewed, it doesn’t have to be embalmed.”
  • Buy that box on the Web. “Get the casket online,” Burkhardt says. “Do not buy it from the funeral home, because — and they hate me when I say this — caskets at the funeral home are marked up between 100 and 500%,” with occasional exceptions, he says. No other single item is so expensive. “I got a $4,000 oversized casket on the Internet (for a friend), and it was delivered to the funeral home the next day, and I paid $1,037.” Today some of the big-box stores, including Costco, sell caskets, too.

It’s Official The Funeral Industry has a Casket Cop-yourfuneralguy

More has been revealed on the situation of the Lawsuit of the monks in Louisiana and the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers in Louisiania . There is a casket cop.

Could Funeral directors have been hit so hard by the Recession that they would hire a casket cop to investigate monks? The answer is yes according to the Wall Street Journal. It has happened in Louisiania.

Snippet

‘Meanwhile, the state funeral board enlisted an investigator, who acts as Louisiana’s casket cop, to catch the brothers in the act. Sworn statements were taken from funeral homes that acknowledged receiving the abbey’s caskets. Pictures of the coffins were snapped before any evidence could be buried.

Board investigator Jude Daigle wrote in a report that in October 2008, he observed a monk-made casket being delivered at a funeral home in Lutcher, La. He spotted the abbey’s truck, according to the report, and saw Mr. Coudrain, the deacon, hop out. “I helped him unload the casket,” Mr. Daigle wrote. “He introduced himself and so did I. He then realized he’d been caught by the state board.”

Mr. Coudrain confirms the account; Mr. Daigle declined to comment.

This past March, the Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors subpoenaed two abbey officials to a hearing. If found guilty of illegal casket sales, each official would face fines of between $500 and $2,500 per violation, the board warned. The hearing, scheduled for mid-August, was cancelled due to a tropical storm.

By then, the monks had already prepared their own federal lawsuit, citing Louisiana’s “casket cartel.”

This is an incredible case of the funeral industry gone vampire over their casket sales. I have seen Batesville sales reps go ape over their competitor caskets. .But a cop to protect funeral home’s casket sales. The funeral Industry does not need this bad publicity.

Importance of a Funeral and Memorial Service-YourFuneralGuy

19 Aug iStock_000005617042XSmall

It is very important no matter how you lower your funeral cost to still have a funeral or memorial service. Today we have a another guest post from Gail Rubin.

Why Have a Funeral or Memorial Service?

Why should anyone pre-plan their own funeral? Perhaps you’re telling your family that you don’t care what’s done with your body or how you are remembered. After all, after you die, you won’t be around to enjoy the party. But the people who love you care deeply.

My friend Gary, a confirmed bachelor in his 60s with no immediate family in the area, says that he doesn’t want a funeral when he dies. To his way of thinking, he’s not religious, doesn’t like ceremonies or rituals, and doesn’t want people to make a fuss. But so many of his friends will miss him and his warm wit, his deep intellect, his incredible guitar playing, and his appreciation of fine wine. Those who know him and call him a friend will want to honor his life, even though Gary pooh-poohs the idea.

My brother Mitch had a life partner named Wes who died from liver cancer in 2007. Within days, my brother and I, along with family and friends, planned a very moving memorial service that reflected the many unique aspects of Wes’s life and character. “Wes explicitly said he didn’t want a memorial service,” said Mitch. “But we didn’t do it for him; we did it for us.”

Funerals, or memorial services if the body isn’t present at the event, are not really for the person who has passed on and may or may not be observing the proceedings. These rituals provide the opportunity for family and friends to come together in support, remember and share stories about the dearly departed, and celebrate his or her character and contributions. Dispatching ceremonies provide an appropriate closing chapter in the book of that person’s life.

“We need rituals, not just for the dead but for those of us who aren’t yet dead, as well. I am weary of sweeping up the pieces for those family members who would not recognize a loss with a ritual,” said Dr. William G. Hoy, a grief counselor and death educator.

He explained, “Very often – with those who don’t stop and ritualize the death – six months later, these families are in my office, having a harder time with grieving and healing. My clinical experience matches fairly closely the experience I hear from colleagues. We need rituals to celebrate the life, to be sure, but also to socially acknowledge the death.”

The bereavement process starts with the recognition and realization that someone has died. The funeral or memorial service provides an opportunity to remember and tell stories about the person, to come to terms with the reality of death, to reaffirm beliefs, and to release the spirit of the deceased. Remembering and reaffirming generate stories and laughter, realizing and releasing prompt healing tears and goodbyes.

Psychologists note a number of reasons why these rituals matter. They make the dead “safely dead,” dispatched with proper ceremony to rest in peace. They confirm that the deceased and their survivors matter, and that the community will continue. They provide structure in the midst of chaos and disorder, and assure communal support for survivors during a stressful time.

the sale of Wal-Mart Caskets threaten the traditional funeral director

Walmart caskets poses at threat to the funeral industry and a help to the funeral consumer. Walmart is the largest retailer in the United States of America. It poses a threat to the Funeral Industry even if it is just selling caskets online. It is part of something called Unbundling of Funeral Packages a trend soon to be encouraged by the Federal Government in the Bereaved Consumers Bill Of Rights (AKA Bereaved Consumers Protection Act). The FTC is

Walmart  has sales that are larger than any third world countries.

From the Memorial Business Journal.

Today, when a behemoth like Wal-Mart starts working your side of the street, things could get interesting, with the obvious reaction being this will cause further downward pressure on retail casket prices.

“Wal-Mart represents a bigger threat than Costco since they have so many nearby locations,” said David Nixon, president of Nixon Consulting, Chatham, Ill.  “Even though their caskets are only online, the retail power is the largest in the United States.”

“This is not an overnight cataclysm, but a slow, inexorable chipping away of pieces,” said Alan Creedy, president of Trust 100, Raleigh, N.C. He sees Wal-Mart’s entry into funeral service as part of ongoing trend toward unbundling.

Star Legacy Caskets of McHenry, IL is the company selling the caskets through Walmart. the company gives next day shipping through Federal Express.

Patrick Swayze| Funeral|Home Funeral-Before Public Death Report-Your Funeral Guy

Patrick Swayze had a cowboy wake, home funeral!

Patrick Swayze had a cowboy wake, home funeral!

It has been reported that Patrick Swayze had a  Home Funeral sometimes known as “Cowboy Wake” The home funeral is where the family cleans and dresses the loved one’s body.

Usually within a day or two after a death friends gather and the life is celebrated in the home. Then the burial or cremation occurs

Essentially this is how it was done before the Civil War.

The Family in the Dirty Dancing Stars case was very wise-THE FUNERAL WAS COMPLETED  BEFORE THE DEATH WAS REPORTED.  BEFORE the  CORONER| FUNERAL DIRECTOR ARRIVED! Yes before the Hollywood Elite knewit was all over.

This story APPEARS  to be Accurate. The whole Scenario  fits totally with the events that followed the Home Funeral of Patrick Swayze.

Declining Funeral Corporation Numbers are nudging a Funeral Industry Decline.

Declining Funeral Corporation Numbers are nudging a Funeral Industry Decline.

The third quarter numbers for Stewart Enterprises are nudging the Funeral Industry towards it’s disaster. Stewart Enterprises did not meet the street expectations in the third quarter 2009. They did show a small  3Q revenue profit  do to debt reduction and cost cutting. The problem is you cannot cut costs and retire debt forever.

Stewart Enterprises, Inc (STEI)is the second largest Funeral Corporation in the United States of America.  The competitor Service Corporation(SCI) International finds itself in  a worse position.

Total revenue at the company fell 9.7 percent to $117.8 million.
Revenue from the company’s cemetery segment dropped 16 percent, primarily due to a decrease in cemetery property sales (translation Cemetery Preneed).

Snippet from tradingmarkets.com

“Funeral revenue decreased $2.5 million, or 3.6 percent, to
$66.0 million.

The cremation rate for the Company’s same-store operations
was 41.8 percent for the third quarter of 2009 compared to
39.9 percent for the third quarter of 2008.

Cemetery revenue decreased $10.2 million to $51.7 million
for the third quarter of 2009.  This decrease is due primarily
to a $3.7 million, or 13.5 percent, decrease in cemetery
property sales.

Wall Street Bundling Life Insurance to hurt Funeral Industry-YourFuneralGuy

7 Sep
The sale of life insurance policies will hurt the funeral industry

The sale of life insurance policies will hurt the funeral industry

Because of the severity of the recession banks have been buying up life insurance policies. Some of the big banks are bundling them together just as they did debt before the Wall Street Crash a year ago. These  Wallstreet banks are selling them as bonds.

This is a risky investment scheme. This will hurt the funeral industry because in the majority of cases life insurance is the vehicle that folks pay for a funeral.

This is another bad sign for the traditional funeral industry in the USA.

From the New York Times:

The bankers plan to buy “life settlements,” life insurance policies that ill and elderly people sell for cash — $400,000 for a $1 million policy, say, depending on the life expectancy of the insured person. Then they plan to “securitize” these policies, in Wall Street jargon, by packaging hundreds or thousands together into bonds. They will then resell those bonds to investors, like big pension funds, who will receive the payouts when people with the insurance die.

The earlier the policyholder dies, the bigger the return — though if people live longer than expected, investors could get poor returns or even lose money.”

This  will mean lost income for the Funeral Business.
