Not Worth a read:Curtains Adventures of an Undertaking in Training| your funeral guy book review.

22 Apr

Adventures of an Undertaking in Training- In this book a Media Guy goes underground in the Funeral Biz giving us  Funny Funeral stories  quips, but no meaningful content beyond that. There are underlying agendas, opinions, in this work, something that should never be found in a Funeral Book.

This work is somewhat entertaining .But that is where the value the book ends. There is plenty in this book about the Funeral Business. Media types have reported and gone underground in the funeral industry before reporting on the dismal trade with great humor. Other authors have been able to add practical advice for the consumer along the way. Tom Jokinen’s book does not do either.

There are humorous descriptions of dead bodies and what is done to them in the preparation room. There is a plethora of funeral books like that.

What is striking is the way the author supports the traditional North American way of the Funeral. The book tries to present cremation as revolutionary approach. That revolution is over cremation is mainstream in funerals. The funeral cost practice of Funeral Homes charging too much for a cremation is not addressed. The issue of Funeral Expenses and the way the industry charges the consumer is glossed over.

To the authors credit he does point out pre need, and the prepaid funeral scam(page 171)-but does not touch on the extent of the problem,  preneed scam that abounds in North America.

Chapter 16 ends With a quote “This… might be the future of the funeral trade: change how people understand death like religion used to” There is a religious bias in this book.

That the book is biased, a strong statement. The authors personal beliefs and opinions jump out on every page. In a book on Funerals personal bias needs to be  kept o a minimum, for a funeral like a wedding is uniquely personal.

The book concludes with a funeral director saying,”I’ll take family over everlasting life”. Jokinen’s humor in the book is laced with disrespect for the afterlife, and offends. If the author wanted to share his thoughts on the afterlife, write about God or Non God, a better forum could have been chosen than a book on undertaking.

This book fails  because it is a failed attempt at humor, better books like this have been done before, it is a biased work and 6 months in the funeral home business is not enough time to begin to have a look at what it is like.

At Amazon.com, The book is tagged in business, and investing. This book will not help you to make an investment in a funeral business  because it does not portay the business realistically.

The blind support by the traditional  media and funeral business is simply out to lunch. ConnectingDirectors.com plagiarized a Time.com  piece called Undertakers Q and A. and posted it in their main section. The sad thing is that Tom Jokinen is a member of the media and not an undertaker at all. What an embarrassment for Time and the Funeral Media site Connecting Directors.

Blast from the Past|Last Episode of “Six Feet Under” You Tube|Your Funeral Guy

21 Apr

Nothing in the last 10 years has educated folks more about Funerals and the funeral home than the TV Series Six Feet Under. The Last episode aired in 2005.
Here is the YouTube clip of the finale  episode of “Six Feet Under”itself, set to the song “Breathe Me” by Sia.

This is the actual song used in the final episode, and for those who have seen this show, or the last episode, get out the tissues and prepare for a tear duct flow.

During the years the showed aired I did not view it all that much, too busy doing funerals. The series inspired many people to become Funeral Directors. I often wonder how many folks with this inspiration are funeral directors today.

Self appointed Funeral Poet Attacks cremation as Not Christian|Your Funeral Guy

20 Apr

When will the Traditional Funeral guru and self appointed Funeral Poet Quit his attack on alternative funerals? It Does not appear that Thomas Lynch is ready to give  this up soon. His latest attack on  cremation is to get on the  “Cremation is  not Christian bandwagon”  The Catholic Church has allowed Cremation  for over 40  years.  This  Cremation in the form of Christian Diatribe all takes place in an article in The Christian Century “The holy fire
Cremation: A practice in need of ritual
.

This in all in spite of the steep rise  of cremation in the USA.

In the Christian Century Article Lynch Describes cremation in a most venomous fashion. Click Here to read.

Speaking in  the typical theological and  funeral ease Lynch presents his arguments leaving you feeling that God Himself  is against cremation.

What may be going on in Lynch’s Article is simply about the promotion of his new book “Apparition & Late Fictions: A Novella and Stories“. Although a novel do not think that the book is not a defense of the traditional Funeral Industry or that there is not a touch of nepotism in the promotion of his new book

.

Whether cremation is Christian or not really has to do with your personal set of Christian beliefs.Click Now to see  how the personal choice of cremation for the Christian is based on one’s personal brand of Christian belief.

One has to admit though an attack on Cremation in Christian  Social Circles is a an effective  book promotion, albeit a tad bit slimy.

A lot of favoritism to the wrong people; lack of respect to both employees & consumers. Death care industry should be about compassion as opposed to dollars, branding & quantity over quality!!

Do not be fooled|Green Embalming is a plan to keep charging for Embalming|Your Funeral Guy

19 Apr

Bio Embalming, Eco Friendly embalming, green embalming is still EMBALMING money down the GRAVE

Do not be fooled, Green Embalming is a Funeral Industry Plan to keep Charging you for Embalming. So Far there is no solid indication that the line of Eco Friendly is friendly to the environment. Sadly to report that this is a plan to raise your funeral cost.  Embalming Fluid embalms and then degrades in the body after initial preservation. The line of embalming products comes from Champion Company: the leader in th production of the Carcinogin  Based Formaldehyde Products. The Product Line is called Enigma. It is called bio embalming.

THE FUNERAL COST SURPRISE IS THAT THEY ARE CHARGING MORE FOR THIS PRODUCT COMPARED TO OTHE EMBALMING  FLUID PRODUCTS. THE COMPANY CLAIMS THAT THE COST WILL NOT BE PASSED ON TO THE CONSUMER.

On the surface this looks like an attempt to raise the consumers funeral cost and keep cremation from happening, The larger question looms how will(does)l the consumer know what kind of embalming fluid is used?

“When compared to traditional embalming chemicals, funeral homes will pay more for Enigma products, but with proper usage, it should not impact the end cost to purchasers of funeral home services, Bauman said.

With the introduction of Enigma, the company has found an additional opportunity to reintroduce their formaldehyde-free products.

“It’s giving us an opportunity to return to customers who shunned us before, now 15 years later they’re more interested,” Gianakopoulos said’-via Springfield News Sun.com

Incredibly Funeral Protester Westboro Baptist Church Pays No Taxes|YourFuneralGuy

19 Apr

It is my opinion that the Westboro Baptist Church Feeds on the Media Frenzy

Incredibly the church status of the hate filled  Funeral Protester: Westboro Baptist church keeps them from paying taxes. This according to Fox News. Now sometimes as a Funeral Director I have seen cult like churches behave badly at Funerals. In some cases these churches begin their antics long before a funeral.

The sad part of it all is that often churches good and bad fancy themselves to be special because of their “church” status. People around the USA of all political persuasion are quite upset with “Westboro” the funeral protesting church. Signifiacntly the United States Supreme Court will Here 1st Amendment Rights Case late in 2010 involving the Westboro Baptist Church protest at a military funeral. at a. as they relate to

For more than a decade, members of Kansas’ Westboro Baptist Church have seemed to thrive on the wrath of Americans, dominating the headlines with their provocative protests at funerals of U.S. soldiers and their in-your-face rhetoric aimed at gays and Jews.

Westboro has been accused of being a hate group, but one detail that has been largely overlooked is that, unlike most hate groups, this group is not required to pay taxes because of its status as a religious institution.
