Sometimes to go forward it is necessary to back. In this case we are going back to pre- civil war days. It was before embalming. The parlor was near the entry way to the house. When a family member died, the deceased was usually laid out in the parlor.
There was no embalming because embalming came with the civil war. Today many folks object to the charges of the traditional funeral home and are choosing the option of the home funeral.
